This course explains floodplain management and risk assessment, as well as operations involved with highway networks within riverine environments. The course provides an overview of federal policies for floodplain management. The text also examines the probabilistic nature of flood events and provides cost-effective solutions to save transportation assets. The material is based on Highways in the River Environment — Floodplains, Extreme Events, Risk, and Resilience, FHWA-HIF-16-018, Chapters 1 through 5.
